Re: Some Background
Hello NM, The image of Chaplin in black & white holding the blue paint can, after spattering top down the red and white canvas, is part of what this is about. Glad that much came through. But its clear nothing else of value did. I will attempt the poem from a different angle at some point. BTW -...

Re: Leavings
He knows the cut of them the ambled drift, or sudden drape of them, these leavings are driven by a bigger clock. Younger, he just dropped a gear, revs screamed them back through his rear view. With road to spare, until time spliced the movie and director became actor. These leavings weren't in th...

Re: Start
Mountain backs above mist appear restless, chill breath curls away. Earth softens around my feet, winter surrenders its grip. It's time to go beyond the dormant fields, beyond the lake's cold fringe, into pastures unfolding memory. I whistle dog jumps to the scent and i lay my jacket about my arm. ...

Re: The Headmaster's Classroom
Hello NM, I enjoyed this poem. This is a man’s recollection of perceived harsh treatment as a schoolboy by his headmaster uncle. The story is presented in four stanzas of four free verse lines each. I don’t play soccer and have never heard of Ian Rush, but knew on first reading exactly what th...

Re: The Headmaster's Classroom
I like your explanation. I also like Colm's interpretation. Okay to have differences in poetry as much as any other artistic medium. On first read, I was actually looking at "never calling him uncle" as defiance on the youngster's part, like not giving in and saying, "uncle" to the headmaster. Mayb...

Re: Sincere Apathy
—the backyard trip light comes on at three am and I part the curtain like the Wizard of Oz; the mother has her brood of kittens on our deck, pawing one, batting another beneath a clean looking moon; she moved under the cedar a few days ago, heavy, a reminder of the strength and pain of childbearing...
