The time has come...

This comes from way back, possibly in the early eighties. I can actually recall writing this on my portable manual typewriter, sat out in the garden. It was a hot and sweaty day like today and I was sat under a tree, which provided enough shade to stop the paper glaring at me but did nothing to rein back the heat. I was working on a novel, but the combination of sweaty fingers and slippery keys was producing too many errors.
I was procrastinating like a Pro when the opening line from Lewis Carroll's 'The Walrus and the Carpenter' slid into my head and suddenly veered off in a different direction. I fed in a new sheet of paper, and grabbed the idea.
It's not the only time the tempo from a classic has set the ball rolling
===========================================================
The time has come, the writer said,
to make a sausage sandwich...
Then I'll sit down and do some work
upon the English language.
I'll train some verbs to make them strong,
with these lead nouns it won't take long.
Some abject adjectives I'll spurn,
no place in my sweet verse they'll earn.
But first this article I'll read
and damn, the clock's moved with such speed
that further sustenance I need...
The time has come the writer said
to make a sausage sandwich.
