Stories from the Silence #5: Desert Mushroom 1957

Post by indar » Sat Sep 14, 2019 11:24 am

Desert Mushroom, 1957

Atoms for Peace
an educational film projected on a roll-down screen
Richfield High School, social studies class,
interviewd those who were there
after the first images we saw of what was wrought.

They were crouched in ditches,
some in bunkers
pierced with observation slots,
3...2...1
they shielded their eyes
at detonation,
saw the bones of their hands
x-rayed--
the bones of ther hands were revealed
but the flesh remained intact.

Young military men in thrall to the power
watched the shape rise
until the sky bloomed blinding red
and spread and spread.
It seemed, said seventeen year old,
private first class, Joel Healy
as if all the clouds of the sky
were on fire.

So powerful!

At 1st confused how Joel connected with the Richfield High School, social studies class, but he's in the film, right?  Perhaps you can make it clearer... like  17yr old students' reactions?

Thanks for the read and comments poet-e. You surmised correctly that Joel was one of the troops ordered to observe the detonation of an atomic bomb in Nevada above ground tests. He would have been the age of many HS students at the time--17. I'll try to clarify that in a rewrite.

Wow, wondered if Joel face health issues from it?

What do you teach?  Poem's speaker seemed like a student in the class??

Iconic moment Linda. Effective putting that moment in an educational context. Personally, I feel history is a document of repetitive stupidity and mankind does not learn wisdom.

Some suggestions:

The closing simile felt mundane, but perhaps that is the point. I've made a suggestion to make it more individual.

cheers

Thank you poet-e and Phil. I thought I responded to these comments already but probably closed out without posting it---that happens. I actually quoted (loosely) the words of one of the observers re: all the clouds of the sky on fire but its poetry---I don't have to be accurate do I. I will think about forest fire as I live in CA and that is a relevant concern.

There have been severe health effects. This was after Hiroshima and Nagasaki so the gov knew full well what was wrought there. The drift carried on a jet stream that spun out over my home state of Minnesota and mothers were warned not to breast feed their babies
