PVC

I remember when wood
was suddenly not good enough.
One neighbour abandoned it,
and soon, another;
three more conspired in the same week.
Their windows were pristine pools
that seemed to scorn all rot.

The men who came to us
bartered easily with complication.
They did their work and moved on,
left us marvelling at noise reduction,
watching traffic from the kitchen table.

Between the layers of double glazing,
my boyish mind imagined
an insect trapped for eternity
like a specimen in a museum.
In time, the only thing trapped was moisture,
forming cataracts on our view.

We hardly noticed,
as we could see what needed to be seen,
and we never thought that what was new
was no better than what came before.

What a good write! I had replacement windows much as you describe installed over a year ago. One of the sales pitches was that the glass filters out UV rays and whatever. My plants died.
