Soul Are

You there, you and your companions
spaced on my baseboards according
to decades-old building codes,
what is your lineage? Once coal
fed your ancestors through umbilical cords
strung on power poles from one coast to the other.
Your coal-fed ancestors sparked a revolution
from whale blubber to gas and oil..

All that energy production has, at last,
set the world on fire: not your fault of course:
be ye not amazed, henceforth there will be no need
to pump it up from plant-stored sunshine
buried underground from eons ago,
it will flow down like mana from the heavens
direct to our new panels on the roof.

Normally I am not a fan of poems that speak directly to inanimate objects but this works so well in your deft hands. Clearly setting out the history our part in it and pointing to an ironic future 'positively'. It is our tragedy as a race to be able to produce so much and achieve so much but only by using so much energy resource, which then threatens our very existence.

Also out fascinating ability as here to put thoughts and feelings into inanimate objects. We can't help but see ourselves in everything - just like dear old God in fact.
