19

Hunger

causes smiles to turn inside themselves

open hangers of the mind to close

sharply, no room for thought,

nor charm, the sugar plummets

faster than bungee and ascends too

once the feeding hour begins.

30 ways to die.
#20

We walked bare-legged
through fields of barley
soft and dense,
palms facing forward
felt the awns' caress
and the sun's radiation
transmuted into gold.

Occasional rains left us
untempered,
with thoughts only
of the harvests to come.

Winters are always soft
on hard bodies,
too young to sense
the growing chill,
until one dawn
the curtains reveal
what lies
beneath the barley.

Day 19

Forgivable

Things we do
things we say
often they just
won't fade way

We didn't say
we didn't do
carry that load
of should-have blues

We hide inside
we take the blame
chokehold of guilt
personal shame

Time may be the
only card to play
to ease your heart
    free your soul
    lighten your step
    lift the load
Show you the way

 It's all forgivable
   so forgivable
     forgivable

I hear a song and the refrain shouting out mercy. Marcel

Day 19

The Fly Within the Cup

The fly within the cup
circles endlessly
looking out,
not up.

I watch in a fascination
that hovers on cruelty.

I could so easily upend the cup,
set the drunken creature free.

But the metaphor of its busy circling--
the futility of its searching--
stuns me.

Is this how we appear to God?
How you sweep from the incidental to the essential. marcel

Triolet 20

Like the man who gets up in the night
To go pee,
Who takes a left instead of a right
Like the man who gets up in the night.
It's a problem when unable to see,
He walks around holding it tight
Like the man who gets up in the night
To go pee.

First of all, I thank everyone for their well-wishes and kind thoughts.

April 20

One Word: Plastic

I vow to reduce my use of plastic
Dustin Hoffman's day is done.
Tupperware parties are no more,
no one takes their lunch to work.

Dustin Hoffman's day is done,
grads ignore elder advice,
no one takes their lunch to work,
youngsters eat in coffee shops.

Grads ignore elder advice,
this generation consults the cloud,
youngsters eat in coffee shops
and stream information on their phones.

This generation consults the cloud,
they are techno-savvy and up to date
they stream information on their phones,
we might learn a few things from them,

they are techno-savvy and up to date
and warn about islands of floating debris
we might learn a few things from them:
I vow to reduce my use of plastic.

NAPO 20 - 2019

Food Chain

I lie in wait, camouflaged and still,
rifle ready to use.
Above me a falcon waits,
looking for his meal.

A shrew rustles the brambles nearby
a mini predator,
ferocious for its size,
looking for its next meal.

A spider spins her web,
then waits with a cold patience
I can never hope to match,
looking for her next meal.

On the misty morning river bank,
slinking with my rod and line,
I find a heron already in the best place
and cede the position to him.

Looking down into another world,
alien to we air-breathers
I see a shadowy pike,
camouflaged amongst the weed.

Lining up to shoot a rabbit
I become aware of a fox,
oblivious to my presence,
concentrating on his next meal.

Kneeling up to take a shot
after a near silent stalk,
I disturb a chittering and defiant stoat,
with no intention of sharing his meal.

I can buy meat or fish in a shop,
but sometimes choose to hunt,
responding to an ancient gene.
But all the above have no alternative.

Yet we still see ourselves,
for some reason, vanity perhaps,
as being the apex predator,
top of the food chain.

I've been writing ever since I realised I could.  Storytelling since I started talking.  Poetry however comes and goes  ;-)

Life can be like gravity sometimes,
it's there...you know it is
you just don't feel it,
jump into a box, close the lid
and fall from a plane,
there'll be no acceleration
you'll feel nothing
until you stop!

Life can be like gravity all the time,
you descend slowly
the box is open
you feel nothing,
just wishing
it would stop.
