Being someone

A rose without a name would smell as sweet

So I adrift in a sea of namelessness

would still not eat meat, love my neighbor

and count character over skin colour,

have sex with those I prefer, believe gods

are chimera and the label liberal is bullshit

invented by those who keep their doors

closed and locked at night. I don’t drive

but who knows what this called. I pick

up litter from the street but no one

has ever accused me of anything. I

subject to myself, quietly breathe,

eat and talk a life free of identities.

Dave, You paint a world of contrasts and contradictions. And the mysterious line break "I subject to myself" in contrast to "I am an object to myself". Marcel

Moments

It is a notion.
It doesn’t heal – it’s not a doctor.
You can tell it, but it can’t hear.
Some say it will tell but has no voice
It measures everything we do;
naps, work, vacation, study, school, travel.
It doesn’t have legs so it can’t ‘run out'
yet it marches on.
You can’t keep it,
It isn’t yours to take or give.
It doesn’t have hands.
You can spend it,
save it,
waste it,
bank it,
have it on your hands.
It has its own magazine.
Pink Floyd wrote a song about it.
Some say you can make it up, but I do not believe it.
It accompanies the seasons
and is broken into zones.
You can drink tea and tee off to it.
It’s a matter of...
It's attached to every meal
and most everything we do.
It has travelers and keepers.
You can watch but not see it.
It can be carried in your pocket,
on your wrist, and smartphone.
You can serve it but not eat it.
You can pass it, it’s in the past
but it can’t be passed.
It’s a stage, a season, an era,
it was before and after the dinosaurs but not during.
It flies without wings.
I could chase it forever but I'm all out.
I must make dinner,
but I need to go to the store
to buy some thyme.

~Deb

A couple of the ladies in our writing group would enjoy this; it is so much like a riddle. Love it. V

Oh, how I agree with the freedom that comes of being a #$%^ Liberal! Ha. Ha. Von

Day 28

Hazy Reflection

In the mirror
I see a face
I no longer recognize.

Where has the mirror
hidden my sloe-shaped eyes,
my newly kissed lips,
my shell-thin ears?

Who is this who
stands before me
searching for what
isn't there?

How cruel of the glass
to reflect time-worn skin
and bottle-brush brows
beneath gray-brown hair.

My brain is the same,
lying within its
age-wrecked casing,
but is it?

How will I know
when it also betrays me?
And, if I cannot remember,
will it be because
it's aged
or simply because
I'm so tired?

Nothing hazy about these reflections Von.
Getting old isn't always great...but it beats the alternative  :)
Nice read.

Loved your Time/thyme poem Deb.
Who'd have thought you could find so many things to say about it.

NAPO 28 - 2019

Tripod

and stares his defiance at every passing dog.
If they weren't on leads he'd fight them all.

Always love a good cat poem Gyppo.
A neighbour had one of those, he was called Hop-a-long  :)
These two lines are especially fab...so funny and in some cases so true...reminds me of
our current cat.

This is a post-ahead for April 28

Italian Cooking in the Upper Midwest

Richard asks me a seemingly unrelated
question, twirling linguini on his fork:
why do we want to travel, see new places
continue to study and learn and then
when we acquire wisdom to be
solid, judicious members of society
we die? I look down at my plate.

Yes I say, yes and just when
I perfect my Italian cooking.
Lovely and clever read Linda.
Why indeed!

Day 30

Echos Of The Divine

What the hell is it all about?
Is there a point - does it really matter?
Days shorten in December
Inward focus takes center stage
The darkest night lingers near.
Comfort of religion the answer?
The guilt-filled solution?
Let Him drink from that stained cup
Let Him save Himself.
Sought enlightenment thru Karma-Sutra
Ate the apple from the Tree of Knowledge
In Adulthood, sought Sainthood thru Manhood.
It's all a big jumble.
Echos of the Divine touch my agnostic mind
What is the point?
I just want to know
But He's not telling.

Congrats on finishing NaPo AJ...and a great way to finish.
I think He (or She) isn't telling because He wants us to figure it out for ourselves.
Our problem is listening to the archaic instead of concentrating on the aesthetic  ;)
