Lisa,

You came along for the ride.  You stuck your toe in the water a few times.  You made your marks.  Next year you can come and play again.

If you come here and play in between the yearly challenge it keeps the 'writing muscle' supple without the 'performance pressure' of a daily deadline.  Some thrive in this month, others need more time to let their ideas gestate, be scribbled though, and re-written again and again until they're happy with them.

The more you do, the easier it gets.   Honestly.

Gyppo
I've been writing ever since I realised I could.  Storytelling since I started talking.  Poetry however comes and goes  ;-)

Having my work chosen by the Society of Scribes and Illuminators led by then scribe to the crown office of the queen, Donald Jackson, is one of my proudest accomplishments

I know we communicated about this long ago--Ieuan Rees is a contributor and wrote a forward for this book. He conducted classes many times in the US and I learned more from him than I can say---wonderful with the pen as well as chisel. I used a chisel and slate in his class just enough to turn dangerous but also to appreciate the absolute skill, commitment and hard work that goes into your craft Colm---to think this is your life's work---wow.

Triolet 30 and final one

Why did I write thirty poems in thirty days?
Why not write thirty as we speak,
On more if I have something to say?
Why did I write thirty poems in thirty days?
I'll spew out hundreds if you pay.
But truth be known, I'd rather speak.
Why did I write thirty poems in thirty days?
Why not thirty as we speak?

I'm winding up this year's poetry 'marathon' with something relatively short and gentle.  It's been lurking in the form of a few scribbled notes since almost the beginning.  Now it's out there, roaming the streets as it were.

You can only protect and hoard your verses for so long.  Sooner or later your 'brain children' have to leave and fend for themselves.  Sometimes we can steer or nudge the reader to a certain conclusion, other times they will find meanings we never imagined, or echoes of their own life and experiences which lift it beyond mere 'marks on a page'.

That is both the curse and the blessing of poetry.  Sometimes misunderstood, and sometimes re-understood.

It's been a glorious month, travelling with you all.

Thank you.

NAPO 30 - 2019

I could take a bus ride

I could take a bus ride,
travel to the place she lived,
and roam the streets.

Maybe pass her in the crowd,
each of us unrecognised,
unaware, and never knowing.

I could visit her last known address
and maybe knock on the door,
possibly finding an echo of her life.

Or perhaps I should stay at home,
pen in hand,
and just enjoy the memories.

For I am older now, half-set in my ways,
and my chair, like my memories,
is mostly comfortable.

Gyppo
Yes, Gyppo, perhaps we should stay at home; but can surely travel on the wings of imagination and memories. A great month. Marcel

Hello all. I will comment more later, but I have to be away from home for a while today.

Atop Trail Ridge Road

The mountains laugh
as sunshine spills
from an azure sky.

Columbines and lupines
dance in the wind,
taunting boulders
for their immobilioty.

Atop the world,
I stare down
upon a frozen lake,
then tilt back my head,

spread my arms,
spin,
breathe in,
a Rocky Mountain High.
And remember to not fly off into the empty fullness of space. Marcel

Life at the Edge

We are the last ones to arrive at the party
the ones just starting to have fun
when the host starts making excuses
the kids have morning practice
the hostess a headache coming on.

We have to listen all day to fireworks
before we celebrate New Year Eve,
everyone else knows Jeopardy answers,
talent show voting is closed.

Here I am typing my heart out
at the end of the thirty day slog
all the other poets have posted
their farewell poems and moved on.

The head of this forum says its Wed. May first
my computer say its the end of last month.
By the time I get to tomorrow
I hope you'll all still be around.
TTB has other places to post,
there's a world of unwritten poems.

30

Like an aging marathon runner I trundle over the line long after the true athletes have left the field, headed to the showers and had their first beer. Thanks for the trip, the hills and vallies, the bends and turns, and most especially the words both poetic and encouraging.

Loose change

When all is said and done

pockets fill with spare change;

leftovers, the unsaid

and unspendable. A gift

perhaps for a friend,

or I’ll donate to charity.
