Smugly

Ah, the gull
floating on waves of air,
much maligned scavenger
dismissed, reviled, disdained.
Yet he escapes
gravity's constraints
while I,
smugly superior,
remain strapped
hopelessly surface bound.

Very nice!!

2.

Trees sway

as winds play

hide-and-seek.

Forest Symphony

From the forest,
a birdsong aria.
Descant strain
above melodic notes,
confection of sounds.

An Evening Walk

Mint, wild sage, lambs quarters
prosper along the ground
beyond the rise.

Lines of steel connect despair
from distances beyond, petri dishes
afroth with desolation and craving.

When cancers darken tips of
a butterfly’s wings, how long
can the center hold?

A plover steps and pecks, steps and pecks
as if to goad the earth back into compliance,
but that is only what I want to see.

I am grateful for not walking
these tracks in search of food
or something to sell.

I remember well what lies beyond,
when dusk falls like water.

Considering this is a daily challenge, this is a skillfully constructed piece. More worthy than being lost in a single thread of multiple posts.

You're too kind Judi. At the end of NaPo I usually have some drafts worth working on. This might be one.

Glad to have you here - what nice surprise. I have spent hours reading your essays and how-to's on PMO.

And you're right -- this is pretty chaotic. More organization next year, I promise. :)

Cheers.

Spittlebugs

I need to hold still,

be an eye with time to see

clear contours through the blur.

Words come thick and fast,

their speed and expressiveness

bring devastation, such is the art

of a lie - a storm bringer that tosses

babies out with broken furniture.

I weigh your sentences, balance

each one against the other looking

for shade and darkness, hidden

inflections until I spy

spittle on your lip,

fear secretes your defence

against my predatory instincts:

you know how to render me helpless:

a slight tilt of your head,

your vague smile, the lazy brown

tops of your feet and that tiny foam

melting on the warmth of your lip.
