NAPO 17  - 2019

50 Years and Counting

Over fifty years ago we said goodbye.
In your street clothes instead of your apron,
stood by the head baker's car
waiting for your lift home,
you looked far more grown up,
not the girl who teased me at work,
and made the world a better place
just by your presence.

We exchanged a few platitudes
and said we'd meet again, some day,
if the gods willed it.

Too young to realise that some day,
sometimes, means never,
and the gods, presumably,
had other fish to fry.

Yet you've always been there,
easy to recall,
gentle on my mind.
Red-brown hair glinting in the sun,
that little smile on your lips
and warmth in your grey eyes.

I've loved and lost since then,
more than once,
become a man, a lover,
a father, and now a grandfather.

I have no real idea how you've lived,
although I heard stories.
But nothing for a long time now.
For all I know you may be dead.
You'll certainly be grey haired by now.

But your image persists
and my mind adds children,
even grandchildren,
to that young girl who stole my heart
and still, no matter what,
holds a place I don't wish to deny.

Gyppo

Gyppo, you struck a cord with this poem. I have had a similar, but opposite, constant "wonder" about a boy I once knew. I will dig out the poem I wrote about the experience and add it tomorrow. Young love and "what might have been" are universal. Von

30 ways to die.

Some drift in gentle ambles
towards the divide,
exit stage left.
All parties in agreement
their amicable contracts concluded.

Others shake the earth
split rock, pillar, temple.

Before and after the tomb's permanent seal
their fabrics fissure
north to south, splintered
a curtain
they'll never draw.

Powerful, Colm.  I wondered if the gruel might run thin in week three, but certainly not with your pen.  You are blanketing the topic, exploring far more than I anticipated.  What a treat to ride along. :D

Cheers.

Holy productive poets, Batman!

All so wonderful.

Sharon, learning what Bolten Strid is, gives your poem a whole new meaning. William Wordsworth also wrote a moving poem about it. I'm sure there are many, yours is striking.

Gyppo, your, "50 Years and Counting" made my eyes water. Heartfelt and moving as are all of the poems here.

Von, you are so right. I'm loaded with Cherokee according to my long-lost, recently discovered half-sister. Who woulda thunk? My Great grandmother used to comment about, "The Indian in the woodpile." I had no idea what that even meant until my 30's. Our youngest son had his DNA analysis and he's 14% Native American. We are all a mix of everything else and whether you believe Adam and Eve were the first parents or that we evolved from the sea, the reality (which should be sweet) is that we are all related somehow.

So many great poems here, wish I had time to comment on them all. Great work, poets! Thank you all.

I have a previous commitment which substantially prevents me from visiting the site for the balance of the month.  It kills me that I have to cut short my NaPo adventure with all of you.  I can't tell you how pleased, awed, astonished, and gratified I am by how well this year's NaPo is unfolding.  You are a marvelous, merry band of writers.

Though I won't have time on the site, I have written feverishly these seventeen days, and have completed my 30 poems for the month.  So, here they come, snap your chinstraps.   :D

Cheers.
