Deep
Lead letters are expensive,
carved with hammer and chisel
then drilled
tiny bits sink precise holes
holds, for
metal strips violently beaten
Into the v.
Black paint soon fades
but lead lasts...
you'll be remembered
hundreds of years from death.
I carve these things
and often wonder
why I bother
to carve so deep?

Re: Deep
From that perspective, I couldn't agree more. And also from the oneness of all flora and fauna, of a things earth and universe....
In having my mind wallowing in the obituaries I was thinking of what to leave for friends and loved ones, of what says one was touched and did touch. Perhaps the gift of memory is all we can leave, yet that gift can be fleeting.........

Re: Deep
We cannot not leave something behind - that is in our nature and we are one mini part of nature. We are also animal matter, like it not. Dust to dust, ashes to ashes. Humans are neither good nor bad anymore than other being - every other hope or critique is fantasy and hybris. A human can do no more than be grateful that he/she is.
Re: Deep
Oh by the way I really believe too much thinking of death distorts life, which always enables death and death is helpless without life. Life is not helpless without death but may be diminished if death were absent. But death is just an annex. In itself, it's pretty dull in comparison to life.
Just my thoughts.
