What the Person Holds (a rewrite to fit today's events)

Post by indar » Sat Aug 17, 2019 11:26 am

Say it's a tool, a safeguard,
a right to freedom from victimization.

More than anything it's American:
how the west was won,

slung in holsters, galloped furiously
across a continent by dime-novel heroes,

roaring out of the 20's with mobs
from New York to Chicago packing heat,

and the glib, glittering gangs
and gangster rappers of L.A..

The true nature of it, the glinting weight,
the singing power a mystical force in potentia

the cybernetic thrill of fingering the trigger
gives reason to what happens next...

Chilling finish indar.
Unfortunately it's so ingrained in your culture/history you're fighting a battle that'll span generations!
It's so restricted here...but I got my hands on a shotgun last year, clay pigeon shooting. The hotel organised it...I loved it.
Boys and guns...it's what I grew up on (movies). You don't see too many movies/TV programmes without someone being shot.
Don't know how to solve America's problem...actually the more I'm thinking about it to more I think you don't have to...the poles
will have melted before the NRA's cold dead hands release their grip
Anywho...I enjoyed the read.

I never thought of that. I guess I can relax. Thanks for the read and uplifting comments Colm, you are a ray of sunshine.

Seriously it is a terrible problem, it's all terrible problems, melting icecaps, guns, a president with itty bitty hands.....

Interesting ride through time, Indar. My favorite line posted above because I cannot get it below due to my lack of patience with technology.

The short version of American's historic love/hate relationship with guns. Well done.

Thanks for the read and thoughtful comment Deb. It seems to me that as long as gun toting is glorified in this country all the attempts to limit the worst of them (high capacity, automatic etc etc) will fail. BTW I wonder how many women feel they need to own assault rifles to protect themselves.

I also wish I could find some definitive answer to what level headed interpreters of the constitution believe was in the minds of the framers of the 2nd amendment to begin with.

Very well written.  So true and sad!  Seems to only be worsening...

Love  the "and the glib, glittering gangs / and gangster" alliteration.

Thanks poet-e, for the read and for noticing those specific lines. Isn't it fun when a bunch of words come together like magic?
