Cousins' Gathering
The blood tie counts,
bringing easy familiarity
despite long absences.
Conversation flows easily,
dipping in and out,
picking out disparate threads
hearing all or one as the hours pass.
Favourite old stories retold,
new adventures added,
re-compiling the family narrative.
Burnishing old legends,
filling in some dark corners.
Then the gathering winds down,
group photo taken by the waitress,
and off we go again,
each to our private selves.
"See you in about six months."
The timing is just about right.

Gyppo,
Nice writing as usual always. This is an accurate canvas of similar get-togethers. Touching bases, rehashing and updating, and ultimately adding a little more to the group narrative. Good, but yes -- not tooo frequently.

First proper gathering since Covid. Some caught it and survived, most of us managed to avoid it. Our Ex-Pat cousin nearly decided to live full-time in Thailand with his wife, but after six months there has retired 'back home'.

Smooth writing, a good narrative. Think we mostly know that grounded feeling of the extended tribe gathered together.
